Cow’s Milk-Based Formula

The most common choice, used by roughly 80% of formula-fed babies. The milk proteins are modified to be gentle and easy to digest. Most healthy, full-term newborns do well on a standard cow’s milk formula from day one.

Made from soy protein and suitable for families avoiding animal products or babies with a rare lactose intolerance. Soy formula is not recommended for preterm infants without medical guidance.

Hypoallergenic (Hydrolyzed) Formula

The proteins are broken into very small pieces for babies with a confirmed cow’s milk protein allergy. These formulas cost more but may help reduce colic linked to allergies.

Designed for preterm infants or specific medical conditions, such as reflux or metabolic disorders. These should be used only on your pediatrician’s advice.

Some newborns swallow air during feeds. Burp your baby halfway through and after each bottle, and keep them upright for 15–20 minutes after feeding to reduce reflux. Small, frequent feeds of 2–3 ounces may help.

Formula-fed babies may stool less often than breastfed peers—sometimes every 1–2 days. Hard, painful stools or none for 3 or more days warrant a call to your pediatrician.

Try a different nipple flow, a warmer or cooler temperature near 98.6°F, or have another caregiver offer the bottle. Patience and a calm environment usually resolve it within a few days.

When to Call Your Pediatrician

Contact your pediatrician promptly if your newborn has fewer than 6 wet diapers in 24 hours, refuses several feeds in a row, shows signs of dehydration such as a sunken soft spot or no tears when crying, has a fever above 100.4°F (38°C) in the first 3 months, or if stools are bloody, watery, or absent for 3 or more days. Trust your instincts—you know your baby best.

How do I know my newborn is getting enough formula?

Watch diaper output and weight. A well-fed newborn has at least 6 wet diapers and 3–4 stools daily by day five, and regains birth weight by 2 weeks. Steady weight gain of about 5–7 ounces per week in month one is reassuring. If you notice fewer wet diapers, a sunken soft spot, or constant fussiness after feeds, contact your pediatrician to review your baby’s intake and growth curve together.

Can I switch formula brands if my baby is fussy?

You can usually switch between standard cow’s milk formulas without issue, since all meet the same FDA nutrient rules. Give any new formula 2–3 days before judging results, because digestion adjusts slowly. If fussiness, rash, or diarrhea continues, or your baby has a known allergy, check with your pediatrician before changing to a soy or hypoallergenic formula rather than switching repeatedly on your own.

Should I warm formula or can I serve it cold?

Safety is the same whether formula is warm or cold, so you may serve it at any temperature your baby accepts. Many newborns prefer body-temperature milk near 98.6°F because it mimics breastmilk. If warming, use a bottle warmer or warm water bath and never a microwave, which leaves dangerous hot spots. Always test a drop on your wrist before offering the bottle to your baby.

How long can a prepared bottle sit out?

A freshly prepared bottle is safe at room temperature for up to 2 hours, but once your baby begins feeding, discard leftovers after 1 hour because bacteria from saliva multiply quickly. Unopened powder stays good until the date on the container, while a made-ahead bottle keeps in the fridge for 24 hours. Label bottles with the time so you never guess.

When should I start introducing solids?

The AAP and WHO recommend exclusive milk feeding—breastmilk or formula—until about 6 months of age, then begin iron-rich solids while continuing formula.
