Outfitting a twin nursery means buying two of nearly everything — and cribs are the biggest single decision. Both cribs must independently meet CPSC 16 CFR 1219, and twins should always sleep on separate sleep surfaces (never share a crib), per AAP guidance. Below are 12 pediatrician-reviewed cribs that work as matching pairs for twins.

Quick Decision Framework for Twins

  • Room-sharing with parents (0–6 mo): Two bedside bassinets — the Fodoss is a strong option.

The Non-Negotiable Crib Safety Rules (CPSC + AAP)

Before evaluating any specific crib, understand the federal floor every crib sold in the U.S. must clear. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) rewrote federal crib standards in 2011 (16 CFR Part 1219 for full-size, 1220 for non-full-size) and banned drop-side rails — a change credited with sharply reducing crib-related infant deaths.

  • No drop-side rails. Federally banned since 2011. If you inherit or buy secondhand, verify manufacture date is post-June 2011.
  • Slat spacing ≤ 2â…ś inches (60 mm). Wider gaps let an infant’s head become entrapped.
  • Firm, flat mattress with a snug fit. No more than two finger-widths between mattress and crib wall. Soft mattresses double the risk of SIDS according to the AAP 2022 Safe Sleep Recommendations.
  • Bare crib. No bumpers (federally banned by the Safe Sleep for Babies Act, 2022), no blankets, pillows, or plush until 12 months.
  • GREENGUARD Gold certification. Verifies low-VOC emissions — meaningful for newborns who spend 14–17 hours daily in the crib.

Why Twins Must Never Share a Crib

Co-bedding twins increases the risk of accidental suffocation, overheating, and rebreathing — all recognized SIDS risk factors. The AAP explicitly recommends separate sleep surfaces even for twins. Two cribs, side by side, is the standard.

Space Planning for Two Cribs

A full-size crib footprint is roughly 30″ Ă— 54″. Two side-by-side plus safe clearance requires ~7 linear feet of wall. For rooms under 10′ Ă— 10′, mini cribs (24″ Ă— 38″) are usually the practical answer and remain safe from newborn through 18–24 months.

Matched Convertibility

Twins reach the toddler-bed transition together (usually 18–36 months, when they can climb out). Matching convertible cribs — like two Babyletto Hudsons or two Graco Bentons — mean identical toddler beds later, which reduces sibling conflict.

When to Call Your Pediatrician

Contact your child’s doctor immediately if you notice:

  • Baby has become entrapped between mattress and crib wall
  • Any fall from crib (mattress not lowered as baby grows)
  • Signs of splinters, loose hardware, or a broken slat after use
  • Unexplained bruising, respiratory difficulty, or unresponsiveness after sleep
  • Suspected exposure to recalled crib components (check CPSC recalls)

Call 911 for any infant who is unresponsive, blue, or not breathing normally.

Twin Nursery Layout: Maximizing Space and Function

Designing a nursery for twins requires careful planning to maximize space, function, and safety. The most common twin nursery layout places two cribs against separate walls to create individual sleep zones. This arrangement reduces the chance that one baby waking will disturb the other, and it allows each baby to have their own visual space. If space is limited, you can place the cribs side by side, but leave at least 2 feet between them to prevent one baby from reaching through to the other. A split changing station, where you have two changing areas in different parts of the room, can be a game-changer for efficiency. If space does not allow for two separate changing areas, one large changing table with a well-organized caddy system can work. Two rocking chairs or gliders are ideal for feeding both babies simultaneously, but if space is limited, one comfortable chair with a floor cushion nearby can work. Storage is crucial in a twin nursery. Use vertical space with shelves and wall organizers, and label everything. A diaper caddy for each baby’s supplies can streamline middle-of-the-night changes. The most important principle in twin nursery design is that function matters more than aesthetics. Focus on creating a space that makes your daily routine as smooth as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can twins share one crib as newborns?

The AAP recommends separate sleep surfaces for each infant, including twins, to reduce SIDS and suffocation risk.

Do I need matching cribs?

Not for safety, but matched cribs simplify identical mattresses, sheets, and later toddler-bed conversions.

Mini or full-size for a twin nursery?

Mini cribs win for rooms under 10′ Ă— 10′; full-size convertibles win for long-term value if space allows.
