Screen Time and Toy Balance
The AAP Screen Time Guidelines
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends avoiding screen time (except video chatting) for children under 18 months. For children 18-24 months, choose high-quality programming and watch together. For children 2-5 years, limit screen time to 1 hour per day of high-quality content, co-viewed with a parent. These guidelines exist because early brain development is optimized through real-world interactions, not screen-based learning.
Choosing Toys That Encourage Active Play
The best toys are ones that do something because of the child’s action, not because of batteries or electronics. Blocks, balls, push toys, art supplies, and simple puzzles all require active engagement. Open-ended toys — those that can be used in multiple ways — support creativity and problem-solving. A cardboard box, set of nesting cups, or collection of fabric scraps can be more valuable than the most expensive electronic toy.
